The sandwich generation is moving toward the proverbial Dagwood sandwich,
which is so filled with layers that it might collapse. As care managers, we know the struggle adult children in their 50s’ and 60s have in dealing with their aging parents’ decline.
But
Now they face another Layer of the Dagwood -Adult children
In the past decade, sandwich-generation couples have been doubly stressed by the need for their 30-ish adult children to move in
On top of that, the sandwich is now triple-decker because adult children in their 20s cannot afford the housing, whose cost has skyrocketed around the country and crushing debt to student loans. So they are descending on their parents, too, creating two age groups of adult children moving in, plus Baby Boomers’ aging parents already needing care. These former empty nesters are now boiling in a cauldron of stress, living the nightmare of a triple-decker sandwich generation family.

Vice President Harris proposed expanding Medicare coverage to help seniors pay for home health care aides.
Harris announced the plan — squarely aimed at “sandwich generation” women who care for aging parents and their own kids — on ABC’s The View, a daytime television talk show popular with middle-aged and older women.
In its current form, Medicare doesn’t widely cover assistance like home health aides for seniors or pay family caregivers who do it for free for the love of family.
“They want to they want to stay in their home. They don’t want to go somewhere else, plus for the family to send them to a residential care facility, to hire somebody, is so expensive,” Harris said.
Harris said she would cover the cost of the new benefit by expanding Medicare drug price negotiations. “We are going to save Medicare the money because we’re not going to be paying these high prices,” she said, allowing the program room to expand benefits.
