Trump medical cuts pass, ripping up safety net for elders. President Trump signed a massive spending and tax bill on Friday, which the White House has dubbed the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” to implement much of his domestic policy agenda.
The bill triggers massive cuts to senior programs, including Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, while giving the ultra-rich new American oligarchs ballooning tax cuts, including Trump.
The bill passed on Thursday after Republican leaders in the House of Representatives convinced holdouts in their party to get behind the controversial legislation.
Trump said, “I can say very proudly that our country is more proud right now than it has been in many, many years,” Trump said during a military family picnic for the Fourth of July. “The last two weeks, there’s never been anything like it, as far as winning, winning, winning.”

Seniors will be homeless
Nursing home care is a mandatory benefit. But cut by Trump, it will end up leaving seniors homeless. With Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” to give the uber-wealthy tax cuts, many nursing homes will close. Plus, because many residents on Medicaid had to “spend down their assets ” to get Medicaid, they will have no home to return to, leaving frail seniors homeless.
Medicaid, the largest payer for long-term care facilities, covers approximately two-thirds of nursing home residents. Reducing dollars, like the Trump Administration and Republicans will do, if the bill passes, the massive, yet already resource-limited, program could have disastrous effects on older adults’ health, safety, and quality of life, not to mention leaving frail seniors homeless.
Nursing Homes are already underpaid per patient, and half of the patients on Medicaid.

Nursing homes were already losing money on Medicaid residents. A federal study of most states released last year found that in 2019, while nursing home costs per Medicaid recipient averaged around $253, the program only paid $198. On average, Medicaid paid 82 cents for every dollar of cost. Many were already in financial trouble. If they close after the cuts, leaving frail seniors homeless.

Older adults must meet state-specific income and asset thresholds to qualify for that care, which often requires them to “spend down “most, if not all, of their money, leaving them without a cushion or a backup plan.
Seniors will be homeless.
“There’s no plan B,” said Jason Sullivan-Halpern, director of the California Long Term Care Ombudsman Association. “This was the only path that they had. And at that point, there is nothing for them to return to.” leaving frail seniors homeless.s

As a social worker, teacher, and author in geriatric care management, I am concerned about the devastating Medicaid cuts. I have a lifelong commitment to middle-class and poor elders who will have hospitals and nursing homes closed by Trump’s ” Big Beautiful Bill, giving his crony American Olligarks like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerburg billions in tax breaks while he figuratively disembowels the poor and middle-class, leaving them with no medical insurance, closing rural hospitals and in that closing leaving frail elders homeless. All this horror to give these entitled billionaires more money to wreak more harm, as through Trump’s attempt to be our fake King, he wants to cut their taxes by taking the money out of Medicaid & Medicare in a reverse Robin Hood Trumpian mood that would bring joy to Trump’s racist father.

A hospital in rural Nebraska announced on Wednesday that it will shut its doors after more than 30 years, explicitly citing the expected cuts to Medicaid that Congress is set to pass in Trump’s bill.
The Rural Hospital, Community Hospital, In McCook Nebraska is now closing .“Unfortunately, the current financial environment, driven by anticipated federal budget cuts to Medicaid, has made it impossible for us to continue operating all of our services, many of which have faced significant financial challenges for years,” Troy Bruntz, the CEO of Community Hospital in McCook, Nebraska, said in a statement to a local news outlet
Increases Medicare costs for low-income beneficiaries

The Bill increases Medicare costs for low-income beneficiaries

- Bill will increase Medicare Costs
- Older people will die
The bill will increase Medicare costs by eliminating key improvements that streamline access to the Medicare Savings Programs (MSP). The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projects nearly 1.4 million low-income people with Medicare—more than 10% of the dually enrolled Medicare-Medicaid population—would lose their MSP coverage due to the rollback of these simplifications. This would undo years of progress in reducing health and financial insecurity among older adults and people with disabilities.
Bill Lowers Social Security checks

Social Security checks will be lowered, forcing beneficiaries to pay higher Medicare costs. In 2025, without an MSP, enrollees would lose at least $185 per month (the price of the Part B premium). These financial burdens would increase over time; annual Part B premiums are projected to reach nearly $2,500 in 2026 and more than $4,000 by 2034. Enrollees with very low incomes have even more at stake—they would lose MSP coverage of additional Medicare expenses, like deductibles and copayments. These costs would consume a significant share of limited beneficiary budgets: One case study found that an older couple living on an annual income of $21,000 would pay $8,340 more for Medicare next year.
Bill makes prescription drug coverage more expensive

Prescription drugs will become more expensive for low-income Medicare beneficiaries. People with MSPs are automatically enrolled in the Part D Low-Income Subsidy (LIS)/Extra Help, which helps them afford their Medicare prescription drug coverage. The Social Security Administration estimates that LIS saves enrollees about $6,200 per year, a number that is likely to rise as drug prices continue to increase. Without MSP and its coordination with LIS, beneficiaries would also be responsible for those costs.
Imposes harmful Medicaid work reporting requirements
Trump created a job loss penalty that applies to individuals up to the age of 64, thereby putting coverage and care at significant risk. CBO finds that at least 5.2 million adults would lose Medicaid, including many who are working or should have an exemption but who would nevertheless get tripped up by the requirement’s red tape. This provision would likely have a disproportionate impact on the 22 million Medicaid enrollees who are 50 or older, who face outsized barriers to steady employment as well as obstacles to compliance reporting, all while having no impact on overall employment rates.
