Calls From Aging Dysfunctional Families-Handling the Entitled Type

August 15, 2023

Calls From Aging Dysfunctional Families-Types of aging dysfunctional families who can call you over the summer vacation

Narcissistic-Entitled Families

Calls from aging dysfunctional families’ adult children or Narcissistic Entited Families’ adult kids will happen during the summer. These VIP Clinet’s adult children call you desperately for private care over the summer visit. Their problems usually develop from a specific kind of “not good enough parenting” where the parents themselves struggle with personality disorders, like narcissistic borderline personality. Families who can afford geriatric care management and home care long-term can do so because they are VIP  clients. These narcissistic families, who can afford care-managed home care are often headed by a scion with a narcissistic borderline personality. Watch Succession, Yellowstone, or reruns of  BIG Hair 89’s Dallas- award-winning shows you stream and you know who these Scions are. We love to hate them but binge on their evil ways. These VIP Clients have the financial resources,  to pay 4-6K for home care and long-term geriatric care management which is usually over a million dollars in assets. When gathering with their adult children during the summer vacation at the family summer house or a family reunion they see the seams shredding in their parent’s minds or bodies and call you for help because they did not have those good enough parents and have no model to care for them as the parents usually did not care for the adult children as kids. They often have no interest in caring for the parents themselves, as they themselves are entitled. You need clinical skills to work with these families because of the diagnosis of narcissism, which can tear a country or family apart. Part of this is drawn from Claudia Fine and Nick Newcombe’s excellent chapter “Entitlement in the Aging Family”, Care Managers Working With the Aging Family, Jones and Bartlett)

Calls From Aging Dysfunctional families-Real & TV Narcissistic-Entitled Families:

Calls from aging dysfunctional families will come this summer- with adult children looking for help. They may see their parents faltering and face caring for them, which they have no plans to do. They will hire you like the private chef or the gardener, a service to carry out their wishes. Entitlement in their family causes the adult children to at times be as difficult and nasty as the parents. These VIP families usually develop from a specific kind of “not good enough parenting” in which the parents themselves have struggled with personality disorders, most typically, in this type of family, narcissistic borderline personality  (for example Former President Trump)They struggled with a borderline personality that went undiagnosed or was formally diagnosed and untreated. We can also see this Narcissistic entitled family head in Brian Cox who in Secession plays the beloved Scion to Love and Hate Logan Roy based on real-life narcissist Rupert Murdock. The adult children will call over the summer when they notice their aging parents’ confusion often because they still fear their aging, more confused will be a perhaps more fierce parent, and the adult kids have no nerve to approach telling them they care. You need clinical skills to deal with them because they are not on TV but asking for your help in real life and narcissism and borderline personalities take  the kind of clinical skills Claudia Fine and Nick Newcombe’s excellent chapter “Entitlement in the Aging Family”, Care Managers Working With the Aging Family, Jones and Bartlett) gives you if you read it. But if you watch  HBO Succession you see them in a series that can be an instructive clinical accompaniment.

Calls from Aging Dysfunctional families-Sumner Redstone’s VIP Family Struggles

Calls from aging dysfunctional families like Sumner Redstone’s is another example of this type of narcissistic borderline personality in heading a VIP family. He was a Media Magnate who founded CBS Viacom with a net worth of 500 billion. His narcissistic borderline personality created a long-term struggle with his family over inheritance and control after he developed dementia. Mr Redstone was conserved by his daughter

These families call you often because they see you as a way to get control of their parents and their parent’s money. These are tricky situations where you must face conservatorship and real war with both parents and adult siblings fighting against each other for power and money, a replacement for the love they never received in the nest. So clinical skills are critical to handling them of all entitled families – they are Tyrannosaurus of dysfunctional families.

Are You Marketing Private Care Management to The Concierge Family- Who Can Afford You?

May 25, 2023

Who is Your Market in an Aging Life or geriatric care management business?

How Do you find Concierge Clients? Your market as a care manager is the rich and famous people, your concierge clients, and three other wealthy groups. The lower 90% only call during a crisis, which usually leads to home care. Homecare costs between 4000-6000 a month. This is why you need to serve that top 10%. According to Pew research, the upper 10% can afford that in this nation of broad income disparity, and 90% below cannot.

Demand and not need determines the success of an eldercare business like aging life or geriatric care manager business. This fundamental fact of life must be considered when developing a business plan for a for-profit, fee-based, Geriatric care management business and so the question becomes how do you find concierge clients?.

Who Can Really Afford Geriatric Care Management

How Do you find Concierge Clients? The target market for a private geriatric care management business is not the 65 million families who need those concierge care management services but the much smaller subset of those families who can afford to hire a GCM or aging life care manager and a private duty home care agency, and are willing and able to pay for the services that GCMs and can actually find their way to you.

This subset really represents the top 10% of the economic spectrum and, more precisely, among the rich and famous, the top 1% who actually held onto its share of national wealth in the 2008 economic crisis and  gained quite a bit with Trump’s tax cut in 2019

Why Need vs. Demand is the Only Way to Fiscally Survive in GCM A   Hard As That May Be to GCM’s

Bob O’Toole MA, a long-time geriatric care manager, wrote a highly researched chapter in the  Handbook of Geriatric Care Management 4th edition,  Private Revenue Sources for the Fee-Based Care Manager- Need Vs. Demand in the Elder Care Market shows aging life and geriatric care manager why you need this 10% of elders and their families as customers.

Can Truck Drivers & VIP Elders Afford Homecare & Care Management ?

April 27, 2022

Who Can Afford Homecare and Care Management?

afford homecare and care management

Yes, both truck drivers and narcissistic, entitled elders can afford home care and care management. Older people who can pay for private homecare and care management- long-term- can do so because they have the financial resources. These resources are usually over a million dollars in assets or having a defined pension. Part of this is drawn from Claudia Fine and Nick Newcombe’s excellent chapter ” Entitlement in the Aging Family”, Care Managers Working With the Aging Family, Jones and Bartlett)

Narcissistic-Entitled Families can afford homecare and care management:

Entitlement in these families usually develops from a specific kind of “not good enough parenting”.In these narcissistic entitled families, the parents themselves have struggled with personality disorders, most frequently narcissistic borderline personality  (example President Trump). They grappled with a borderline personality that went undiagnosed or was formally diagnosed and untreated.

The narcissistic or borderline parent essentially does not experience the child/children as separate and discreet from themselves and, moreover, uses the child/children to serve parental needs.  This parent-child relationship is characterized by severe boundary issues in which seduction and abandonment are ever-present dynamics and where emotional unpredictability and instability are constant.  ( Fine and Newcombe- Entitlement in the Aging Family, Care Managers Working With the Aging Family)

Rich and Famous-Entitled Families Can Afford Homecare and care management

These families are identified by the parents’ socioeconomic, financial, and political prominence.  ( example President Reagan)They are families in which all basic needs, services, resources, and creature comforts are obtained via income, assets, abundant discretionary cash flow, and/or come from the political position, station, or power.  Once again, the entitlement of the family is passed from the parent to the child who in turn brings these behaviors and actions to the caregiving milieu and care management relationship.  In this category, the entitlement arises from a family that is accustomed to purchasing everything.  They look to pay others to meet their needs (as opposed to families who must themselves find and orchestrate ways to meet basic and complex needs themselves or with the help of the extra-familial system).  Often these families have household staff, i.e., nannies, butlers, drivers, private pilots, cooks, and maids.  They may have available to the business and family lawyers and accountants, as well as, teams of medical professionals and concierge physicians.  Consequently, in almost all situations they are uninvolved in processes, especially those that are difficult, stressful, and time-consuming.  ( Fine and Newcombe- Entitlement in the Aging Family, Care Managers Working With the Aging Family)

afford homecare and care management

Well-heeled Seniors can Afford Homecare and Care Management,

According to the New York Times,  middle-class retirees who buy shoes from Payless but have a defined pension can afford homecare and care management when they need it. They rode the post-war economy, held jobs long term,   through that defined pension (no 401K) face a very healthy financial picture in aging.  They worked for city, county, and state governments are teachers, truck drivers, social workers, and subway drivers, or were union members in all trades. They had a career at Xerox, IBM, Campbell Soup, and big Fortune 500 companies.

Professionals- Physician, Attorneys, CPAs can afford homecare and care management

This group made a very healthy living during the late 20th Century, probably had a defined pension, and have very lucrative investments that allow them to afford home care and care management. They usually come from nearly iStock_000063346301_Medium-1.jpgnormal families and have been well parented although you will find a mixture of dysfunctional aging families. Their adult children tend to be supportive of their parents, although again you will find a mixture of dysfunctional families in this category.
