What Do Long Distance Care Families Need for Parent’s Sheltering in Place 4 COVID ?

 Long-Distance Care Providers need a safety net for themselves.

Adult Children who live at a distance from older family members need someone to cover the tasks to help their loved ones when needed.  During COVID -19 when all elders should shelter in place because they are the most vulnerable to the novel, deadly virus long-distance care providers really need help.

COVID -19 means it is best for people over 65 to have little contact with others. But not all the supplies can be ordered online. In fact with the Post office delivery slowing down, everyone who lives long distance, may wait a long time for delivery of needed items for COVID safety, especially if they live in a rural area,. These family caregivers may need someone to actually shop and pick meds at the last minute when needed food or meds do not arrive by mail. Having another person to accompany the elder on walks with a mask and safe distancing or a drive breaks up the tedium that can arise from the loneliness and isolation of sheltering in place.

 

Safety Net for Double Disasters

If there is an emergency on top of the pandemic- Long-distance care providers need someone to respond as they live far away. During this summer with double disasters like wildfires now in Colorado, hurricanes blowing up the east coast they need an emergency plan on top of the COVID threat. A surrogate must be ready to help the older loved one right away and get them out of harm’s way fast and check if it is even safe to go to a shelter.  What they need is an emergency safety net.

If family at a distance does not have a friend or neighbor who can do this, they should consider the perfect emergency and daily safety net in a geriatric care manager. The Aging Life Care Association has an online search tool to find a professional by ZIP code. It also includes a list of questions to ask when you look to hire someone.

GCM can Provide & Supervise Caregivers’s For Covid Related Tasks

If the family caregivers chooses, the care manager will arrange for well screened aide, practicing covid saftey,  to do all the shopping, take the elder out in the neighborhood for a walk or a car ride, prepare

meals, engage in social connections, and do all the cleaning and disinfecting need daily with  the coronavirus threat . The GCM will visit aging parents on a regular basis to check on the health status of the elder in general and in relationship to Covid-19 exposure plus confer with their care providers along with texts calling and email them for supervision. Most of all they will regularly confer with with the family caregiver to get keep them up to date.

The Long Distance care provider can have care providers from the care management agency care do all of these tasks, depending upon other back-up and care level of your older loved one. A care manager themselves, will directly monitor your loved one’s health, respond in emergencies like hospital admission, accompany them to a doctor and manage the care management care providers when you are not there and directly report to you. How To Create a Team in the Long Distance Family During Covid 19?

OFFERING A COVID care plan product with Long Distance Care Providers

The first step for the Long-distance family members (LDF) worried about elder exposure and hospitalization of Covid-19 can be to take a team approach. This can be a call with a geriatric care manager for a consultation that will help long-distance families work as a team to keep elder family member safe while you are at a distance This Care management consultation can be done with a HIPAA-compliant video conferencing services 

 

  • The first thing that the geriatric care manager works on is to find out if the older person has the required legal documents – Advanced directives, POA/HCPOA & GCM HIPAA release because of the risk of both hospitalization and death due to age-related COVID-19. If these documents are not present, the care manager will have a discussion with senior and the long-distance family regarding their wishes, explaining older adults over 65 are at higher risk for severe illness. The care manager will discuss who is to be the health care decision-maker with the older adult and suggest they consult a family attorney or elder law attorney to complete.  If they choose not to use an elder law attorney, as time is of the essence in the pandemic,  they can suggest access AARP advanced directives documents for any state which can be executed quickly.

 

  • If documents are completed, locate in the home and provide explanations to the family that they must give a copy to emergency contacts and physicians as required and place in planning binder. In the planning “Go binder” list all emergency contacts with phone numbers/e-mail addresses – family, friends, physicians, pharmacy, professionals providing in-home services.  Also, list all medications and prescribing physicians in “Go Binder”. Upload documents into caregiving applications like caring village.com  so the long-distance from always has the updated documents.

Other problems that geriatric care managers who offer consultation can solve for  long-distance family members

  • Create a Household plan of action for prevention and possible infection with COVID 19.
  • Identification of technology tools to keep client and LDF in contact
  • Evaluate the presence of required cleaning/safety products as recommended by CDC
  • Evaluate the area of home appropriate for quarantine in the event of suspected COVID infection of client or caregiver

  • Development of client-specific communication tool for possible hospitalization to individualize client needs, status and care planning post hospitalization

How Catchy Copy Can Sign Up New Long Distance GCM Clients

GCM as Wonder Woman

Care managers need to create a gold-standard written copy to advertise their services to ling distance customers. However, you need a Wonder Woman spin that will make copy stand out from your competition.

Here is a sample you may use for long-distance care providers

1, “If you are a long-distance family care provider for an elder, give yourself Wonder Woman as a  powerful sister to help with the care of your aging family member.

2. Using a gold standard care manager is a preventative, prudent excellent choice for 3 reasons.

  • a. If you live long distance and there is an aging parent crisis,  your safest choice is to have a local GCM  to solve it. In an urgent situation, the care manager can go to the hospital or emergency room.
  • b. This is more cost-effective than you getting on last-minute, expensive flights. You can still go but, like Wonder Woman, they can immediately be there to deal with the crisis and solve it. She is good insurance.
  • c. Before any crisis, you can have the GCM aka Wonder Woman will do an initial assessment and visit your older relative periodically. This is preventative because Wonder Woman can see and solve the problem before it becomes a health crisis that might put your loved one in the hospital.
  • 3. Think of a care manager the way you do one of those blow-up beds. You can pump them up when you need in a crisis—perhaps avoid that crisis, and you yourself can sleep more soundly and with more peace of mind in your own bed.

5. What a geriatric care manager aka Wonder Woman and Superman can do for you are:

  • Save you money by helping keep your parent out of the hospital and you off emergency long-distance flights.
  • Facilitate a family discussion of needs, resources, and division of labor among friends family
  • Recommend ways to proactively prepare and plan for a parent’s possible health care crisis.
  • Work on family cooperation to formulate a realistic parent-care plan.

  • Assess the strengths and weaknesses of all of the potential caregivers
  • Help adult siblings resolve conflicts about care decisions.
