US COVID Double Jeporady- Race& Aging

February 1, 2022

To Celebrate Black History Month let’s explore the recent revelation from COVID of the Double Jeopardy of COVID Race and Aging

There is a US  double Jeporady- Race and Aging showing up in our 3-year-old pandemic. Black people and older adults are the two groups most affected by COVID-19. History is not just about the good things that transpired but the negative events that occur like COVID and what it has revealed about the health of both Elders &Black Americans.

This double jeopardy, as a race- and age-informed analysis, demonstrates how Black race and old age are associated with practices and policies that shape key life circumstances (e.g., racial residential segregation, family and household composition) and resources in ways that embody elevated risk for COVID-19.
In a cross-sectional study of adults tested for COVID -19 in a large midwestern academic health system, COVID-19 positivity was associated with the Black race. Among patients with COVID-19, both race and poverty were associated with a higher risk of hospitalization, but only poverty was associated with a higher risk of intensive care unit admission.

Racial Capitalism

Double Jeopardy -Race& Aging

Racial capitalism is a fundamental cause of the racial and socioeconomic inequities within the novel coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) in the United States.
The Double Jeopardy -Race, and aging show up in the overrepresentation of Black death reported in Detroit, Michigan is a case study for this argument. Racism and capitalism mutually create harmful social conditions that fundamentally shape COVID-19 disease inequities. These disease inequities  (a) shape multiple diseases that interact with COVID-19 to influence poor health outcomes; (b) affect disease outcomes through increasing multiple risk factors for poor, people of color, including racial residential segregation, homelessness, and medical bias; (c) shape access to flexible resources, such as medical knowledge and freedom, which can be used to minimize both risks and the consequences of disease; and (d) replicate historical patterns of inequities within pandemics, despite newer intervening mechanisms thought to ameliorate health consequences. I would also add that the majority of paid caregivers are people of color and contract it because they work with COVID patients- .  Interventions should address social inequality to achieve health equity across pandemics.

How Do We Change the Roots of This Double Jeopardy of Race & Aging?

So we hope that these health revelations will spur our government to address the roots of this double jeopardy-Race and Aging, something we have failed to address, these historical patterns of inequity for poor people of color and all people of color not just over pandemics but our entire caste system when elders and people of color are at the bottom, as Martin Luther King said, along with the untouchables

Why You Need a Marketing Data Base Especailly Now with COVID?

September 21, 2020

COVID Has Made Marketing To Lead Sources Critical

Geriatric Care Managers Need a Marketing Database

You need a marketing or Contact Management database( CRM) to market to lead sources. An aging life or geriatric care management agency’s marketing has three key target audiences or lead sources: individual clients who need care, referral sources, and children of aging parents.  Marketing databases are the key to reaching lead sources such as 3rd party referrals like elder law attorneys, upscale assisted living, trust officers, concierge physicians.

In the Deadly Fall Confluence of COVID and Seasonal Flu You Really Need the Right Marketing DataBase

The JAMA Journal tells us “The confluence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and seasonal influenza this fall and winter will result in considerable morbidity and mortality, stressing the health

system. With more than 200 000 COVID-19–related deaths already, the US could see a second wave of disease later this year. In 2018-2019 (a “moderate” year for influenza), the US experienced 35.5 million influenza cases, with 490 600 hospitalizations and 34 200 deaths related to influenza.1 An effective COVID-19 vaccine is unlikely until 2021. Even though seasonal influenza vaccines have variable year-to-year effectiveness, they can significantly reduce morbidity and mortality, especially with high coverage.”

Here are some of the many choices ALCA or Geriatric Care Managers can check out

  • SalesForce For Small Business
  • GoldMine
  • Act!
  • Highrise is a contact management database.  Easier to use than SalesForce,  Basic account for 6 users, with 5 GB of storage and 5,000 contacts is $24.00 monthly.
  •  Zoho lets you have 3 users and up to 5,000 contacts. An Excel spreadsheet of contacts can work in a start-up if the file is set up correctly to capture the necessary information.
  • Clear care can also be used as a contact database and a client database used by Aging Life GCM who have a home health component
  • WHY DO YOU NEED Customer Relationship Database FOR MARKETING?

  • Rolodex on Speed
  • Throw away all those business cards
  • ADD all 3rd party targets you need to market to for referrals
  • all contacts in the community that help you weave a care plan- can be the same as targets
  • all the contacts that you use as your individual prescription- which is your care plan
  • Will send a form elder law letter to all elder law  or third party contacts o ( Att) track all calls or marketing visits to a concierge physician or any contact group C(P)Track your marketing visits, data, send Follow up letters

Emergency Go Binder -Family Caregivers Need One in Pandemic

August 13, 2020

   In An Emergency, I  Panicked

I live in Santa Cruz County, Ca. , where the disaster of COVID stalks us but we had a double disaster with one of the 30 fires begun by lightning strikes all over California. Our fire set the Santa Cruz mountains, with ancient 3000-year-old redwoods, ablaze, and caused 70,000 evacuations ,as the firefighters did not have enough fire personnel to fight the fire. There were so many fires statewide that all firefighters in the state were not enough to fight the blazes. In addition to the horror, the fast-spreading fire, our three assigned planes to drop water on the inferno, could not fly as smoke and fog prevented it. They went to other California fires.

I Had No Grab and GO, Binder

When all this was announced by emergency alerts we were told to prepare to evacuate too. In spite of just teaching how to put together a go binder for COVID- I had no go binder myself. I had no list of what I would take in an emergency from a 5 bedroom house with multiple family heirlooms, original art by children, grandchildren, and now famous friends, I had never scanned the multiple  photographs of our family in frames to GOOGLE PHOTOS  all over the house and those critical important documents like our trust, birth certificates, passports, insurance info in filing to add a go binder. I  never made a GO Binder. I am doing it now when the fire is 30% contained.

Prepare for Double Disasters Now

In emergency situations, people sometimes do not think rationally like me. We never know how we are going to react in an emergency until it actually happens. In order to prepare for any situation, hurricanes & COVID, Fires &COVID- creating a grab-and-go binder should be an important part of your shelter in place plan for aging friends or relatives.

With COVID,the older person who is sheltering in place, as safe as the family and elder have been, can still contract COVID and be rushed to the hospital in an emergency. But on top of COVID other emergencies like storms wildfires, floods happen on the top of the pandemic. Think of this summer where hurricanes have already spun up the east coast, making it a double cataclysm of elders’ and family caregivers’ lives.

What to put in Go- Binder

You want and binder with all the emergency contacts, documents like advanced directives, DNR power of attorney and family contacts, You the family cannot physically go into the hospital or evacuate but this Go binder can take your place. With important information about your family member when they are admitted without you by their side. Your go- binder should contain your family members’ most important information and documents. This will include.

  • Medical information
  • Emergency Contact List
  • Advanced Directives
  • Critical medical, insurance, social security, Trust/will docs
