Merger of Homecare and Geriatric Care Management Makes You a Concierge Agency

April 11, 2023

The merger of homecare & care management gives you a concierge care manager who will serve& draw the top 10% of concierge clients

This merger of homecare and care management gives you the way to position your merged agency as the only home care agency that gives gold-standard exclusive  1-1 services to the top 5 % who demand this entitled level of care – who are the ” Rich and Famous” s (for example, President Reagan), Narcissistic Enrtitles Families ( Example President Trump)

Concierge Client-Teacher with defined pension

The merger of homecare & care management gives you marketing power to sign up the 90-55% 10% “Well Heeled Middle-Class Seniors: who are concierge clients in their retirement as they have defined pensions because they were in a union and never given a 401K. These surprising concierge clients are usually not demanding – they lived frugal work lives without riches, shopped at Payless or grocery outlets- but can afford you now in their generous retirement. They are represented by teachers, nurses, bus drivers, subway drivers, etc.

The lower 90% only call when there is a crisis, and that crisis often leads to home care. Homecare costs between 4000-6000 a month. This is why you need to serve that top 10%. The upper 10% can afford that, according to Pew research, in this nation of broad income disparity, and 90% below cannot.

Demand and not need determine the success of a Homecare or geriatric care manager business. This fundamental fact of life must be taken into consideration when developing a business plan for for-profit, fee-based home care and geriatric care management businesses.

Who Can Really Afford Homecare and Care Management?

merger of homecare and care managemeny

The target market for the merger of homecare and care management combined will not serve not the 65 million families who need homecare or management services but the much smaller subset of those families who can afford to hire a geriatric care manager and private duty home care agency or are willing and able to pay for the services that GCMs who can actually find their way to you.

This subset really represents the top 10% of the economic spectrum and, more precisely, among the rich and famous, the top 1% who actually held onto its share of national wealth in the 2008 economic crisis and  gained quite a bit with Trump’s tax cut in 2019

Adding geriatric care management with concierge customer services  transforms your  Home Care Agency into a more profitable service.

Why- a geriatric care manager is a powerful health care concierge, just like concierge medical services.

Combing these two services is a highly effective selling point to potential concierge clients who are in the top 10% income brackets.

These clients can afford long-term care geriatric care management and the most costly long-term expense, private duty home care.

A geriatric care manager is a highly skilled geriatric health care professional who acts as a personal GPS to the concierge aging  family, making your homecare agency more attractive to wealthy clients

GCMs and ALCA members offer home care ultra-personalized aging parent care which Concierge Clients demand.

You build a deep relationship with the client and family by adding a geriatric care manager who creates this

Adding Geriatric Care Management Gives you A GPS through the Journey of Aging

stock-photo-16832488-tense-couple-in-therapy-session.jpg

The care manager who practices as a GPS through elder care helps your concierge clients home care clients step by step through one of the hardest journeys of their life.

A geriatric care manager’s highly personalized service meets all the needs of the concierge’s aging family and the client.

GCMs are like a concierge at a 5-star hotel.  They serve the entitled clients and their family caregivers by solving their health and psychosocial problems as they age, arranging paid care through your agency, and finding many other ways to relieve the caregiving stress problems of their adult children while making elder care more seamless.

The first and most important reason to merge care management &homecare is money. You will be able to capture billable hours that you are now giving away for free. The second reason to add care management to home care is market positioning. Clients will choose your agency if you offer this merger of 2 services key senior services and competitors do not. A third reason is a care manager is a perfect person to introduce home care to the family caregivers. Care Managers sit down with the family and go over the geriatric assessment and care plan they created for the client. Last, this 1-1 care manager meeting introduces a concierge guide through the labyrinth of caregiving, showing exactly what homecare plus care management will do to solve the client’s problems, increase their quality of life and offer relief to the sometimes-desperate family members. How to Capture Family Stories from Seniors on the Holidays

Capture Family Tales From Aging Parents

Have you captured family tales from older family members? Or have you lost an aging parent and wished you had asked them more questions about their past, your family history, and your childhood? Have you dabbled in ancestry and realized that you could have just listened closely to the stories your deceased parents told you and written them down?

Do not look back! Make this New Year the year you collect the stories from your family. Learn to use 10 reminiscence tools, technology, and techniques to hear family history at holiday dinners and events during Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or New Years.

10 Tips to Capture Family Tales from Aging Parents

1. Use empathetic listening. This means to make all the messages you are giving the older person— tone, how fast you speak, how they are sitting-  all say, “I want to listen to you.”

2. Ask questions that prompt the story but don’t make judgments. If there are going to record the family tale, do it in a way that doesn’t distract or stop the older person from talking.

3. Start somewhere. If the elder isn’t going to tell stories on his or her own, start the story and see if they will follow along.”What was a New Years’ Resolution that you made and kept” ” Do you remember your favorite doll ” What was your first day of school like”

4. Music is just next to memory in the brain shown by Alive Inside So use Alexa, or Spotify, to play  40’s

and 50’s music or especially the -Simple ways to spark reminiscence when you visit older family members :
5. Look at old photos together. Photos trigger memory even with dementia. Choose ones from a period of time the person currently remembers, which could be the person as a young adult, teenager, or even a young child.
6. Play music from their teenage years. It is the background to the most emotional period of anyone’s life and is deeply lined into memory.
7. Enjoy food they like or food that is a family tradition or specialty, particularly ones that have an element

Family With Grandparents Enjoying Christmas Meal At Table

of memory attached to family celebrations. like Mom’s Briscut, Dad’s Sunday Supper lasagna, or “Aunt Helen’s Lemon Cake”.

8. Story Worth was started by Nick Baum, a tecky who was, in a way, a long-distance care provider for his parents in Sweden. He was curious about their past and invented the app based on his own need to gather his family history. My husband is a teller of past tales as a California Highway patrolman, then Hippiedom, then as top marketing director for Pacific Cookie Company, the best cookies here in the west.

Our daughter Kali gave him Story Worth as a holiday gift. He wrote down 40 stories or memories from his past. They were being published by Story Worth in a book, saving in print the precious reminiscence that would have been lost but now is found in a  book that was given to our adult children and then generations to come.

This is a brilliant way to capture reminiscence and I  recommend it to adult children who want to enshrine personal memories in print that otherwise would be lost when they reach back for them.

9. Life Bio-  provides an online template of biography and autobiography questions that have been carefully crafted

10. Quick Voice Recorder to catch the memory on your phone

Use reminiscence as a part of a whole new domain in aging called quality of life or attending to the older person’s need for joy through activities that stimulate the mind. Reminiscence does that- so find out more about how you can increase the quality of life of older people after the holidays and all year long by building a quality-of-life reminiscence program like Nina Herndon describes in her chapter on Quality of Life in Handbook of Geriatric Care Management

Adult Sibling Rivalry at Thanksgiving- Where To Get Help?

October 25, 2022

A sad woman crying as she prays.

Siblings are The Biggest Source Of Stress Between Human Beings

At family rituals, like Thanksgiving next month, adult siblings often are often brought back together. If you are one- will it be a happy feast or wrecked by holiday sibling rivalry??

Sibling Rivalry Can Give Acid Reflux to Grandma’s Thanksgiving Dinner

As Gail Sheehy said in her book, Passages in Caregiving, we think that siblings will automatically support each other when aging parents fall apart. Sheehy quotes sociologists, Karl Pillemer and J. Jill Suitor, on sibling rivalry, in a study they did conclude that siblings are inherent rivals and the biggest source of stress between human beings.

If you are a midlife sibling, perhaps you have a brother or sister to whom you hardly speak because of sibling rivalry. Maybe you are about to see your siblings at the coming Thanksgiving feast, even on zoom during COVID, and anticipate largely ignoring him or her or doing chitchat as you seethe the inside. If you fit this description of sibling rivalry, you are in the same lurching boat as uncounted baby boomer siblings all over the world.

Childhood Wound Ripped Open

That wound from childhood may still ache enough to keep you on the furrowed path your family followed when you were young. Now, however, you and your adult siblings, nearing or at retirement age, may need to come together again to be part of a niece or

adult siblings need to come together for aging parents

nephew’s wedding or christening, help plan a parent’s anniversary dinner, or, most important, oversee the increasing care of elderly family members.

Best Thanksgiving Sibling Rivalry Film

I suggest you watch Pieces of April, a fabulous Thanksgiving film ( lead 21-year-old Katy Holmes debuts in a standout performance) where the film’s dysfunctional family revolves around adult sibling rivalry. The film is also about interracial couples, and in the end, around a catastrophic illness of the aging parent, where the siblings need to resolve their differences. It also makes it a trifecta with dementia. The grandmother, who has dementia is taken out of her nursing home to join the dysfunctional Thanksgiving feast and offers surprising sanity to the sibling-rivalry drama.

If you recognize this problem in your own family, seek counseling before coming the holidays engulf you. Contact the Aging Life Care Association to find help before a parental crisis.

The Holiday Season is Upon Us & Can Be Caregiver Hell

October 21, 2022

Adult children usually see their elderly parents soon on Christmas, Hanukkah, and Thanksgiving- all major holidays.

The Holiday Season is upon us. Thanksgiving, Hannukkah, and Christmas are all coming up when families gather around ritual gatherings. Adult children can notice their aging parents’ struggling with memory, and speech, and preparing those ritual meals. Then midlife siblings may be alarmed by any behaviors that threaten the normal order they always experienced.

When The Holiday Season is upon us ,the discussion will turn to aging parents. Thanksgiving usually involves alcohol. With a normal family, discussing this when alcohol is involved may or may not be a good idea. In an aging long-distance family, this would be the time to set up a family meeting via teleconference or Skype when everyone is sober. You could just ask everyone if would gather ideas and you can discuss it at that time.

With elderly parent’s decline- everyone’s independence is threatened and anger and frustration can be rampant.

If adult siblings did make a  visit to elderly parents before Thanksgiving, it could have been bitter or sweet or it was just plain scary. This is why it is best to set up a post-thanksgiving meeting with all the siblings to discuss care, not when people are drinking more than they should on Thanksgiving.

Adult children may decide they must intercede or offer direct help, even if it is rejected. Then family members who do not live nearby become long-distance care providers, joining 7 million others in the US.

Offer to Facilitate a Telephonic Family Meeting After Thanksgiving

The frightening part often happens when you haven’t seen an aging Mom or Dad for a while. If midlife siblings live long distance, making an occasional visit can set off alarms, especially if they find aging Mom or Dad has gone downhill. If they call you, offer to facilitate the call using your family meeting facilitation skills, to create an agenda with the family, and keep everyone on the topic of parental care in the here and now, rather than fracturing into an argument about the past or old family wounds. With a care manager as a facilitator, they will find your value.
