Overcoming the Reluctance to Charge Fees
By | September 21, 2015

Charging a reasonable fee for care management services is wrenching for many people in the helping professions. Care managers often undervalue their own expertise and commitment. They have years of training in their field, just like lawyers and physicians do, but because caregiving is a social service they feel that their high level of skill is not as “billable” as physicians’ and attorneys’ time is. Even private care managers set their hourly fee too low, and often-non profit agency care managers are alarmed at the hourly fee established by the nonprofit sponsoring agency.
The root of this “fee phobia” can be that in previous nonprofit and government positions, care managers have been paid a salary and are unaware of the many costs associated with running a business. The charge for hourly care management looks large when compared to the hourly rate received by the care manager, but it must be recognized that salary is only one portion of the cost of doing business.
