If you have not done this already, a key task of a long distance care providers is to gather all the key legal, financial, and insurance paperwork for the older person during your visit.

 

Explain the reason to do this. If they were hospitalized or in an accident, you would make sure that bills were paid and their business would be taken care of. There will be copies of all papers at the older person home, if they are mentally clear. The documents will be shared on line to family members as agreed upon by older person and family. If this step take mediation, this is a good reason to hire  a geriatric care manager 

 

If the older person is mentally clear, make copies and place them in a binder with a tab for each category, and show them to use it and where it is located.

 

 Take the originals back home with you, Scan them and, keep in your own computer then share with other family members if appropriate. Copy all the information digitally into a cloud system such as Dropbox . You can store them in all Caregiving From Distance  Family folders , where you can store medical history, community support services and other vital information

 

 

 

This gives all family members who are authorized can access the information from any computer or tablet connected to the Internet. Place the originals, in a safe deposit box. if you wish paper copies. , set up a filing system for yourself at home with a second set of copies,

 

 Key Legal documents include

 

Birth certificate, social security card, marriage certificate, divorce decree, military records, will, trust information, power of attorney for health care, bank statements, retirement information, vehicle title,

 

 Key insurance information includes

auto, homeowner’s, Medicare, Medigap, long-term care, employer-spon-

sored health plans, disability. Life insurance, safety deposits box, homeowners insurance If you have questions about insurance, make an appointment with the State Health Insurance Program (SHIP,) a free senior insurance counseling service through the Area Agency on Aging in every county in the country.
