Culturally Appropriate Caregiver Assessment-
By | February 18, 2015

Caregiver assessment should also reflect a culturally competent care management practice and approach. A care manager cannot assume that the wording of items or the construct of the caregiver assessment they use translates well for minority groups whose primary language is not English.
Cultural groups speaks not only many languages that the care manager may not understand. But the care manager, by communicating with an instrument, like a care manager assessment may be communicating poorly just by the way the questions in the assessment tool are worded.
Even in one language such as Chinese, there are two distinct dialects. The care manager’s best bet may be to get someone who speaks English and the language of the caregiver, or get a translator to ask the questions. The care manager can also resort to just using an oral interview with a translator if the care manager does not speak the caregiver’s language.
