The Holiday Season is Upon Us & Can Be Caregiver Hell

October 21, 2022

Adult children usually see their elderly parents soon on Christmas, Hanukkah, and Thanksgiving- all major holidays.

The Holiday Season is upon us. Thanksgiving, Hannukkah, and Christmas are all coming up when families gather around ritual gatherings. Adult children can notice their aging parents’ struggling with memory, and speech, and preparing those ritual meals. Then midlife siblings may be alarmed by any behaviors that threaten the normal order they always experienced.

When The Holiday Season is upon us ,the discussion will turn to aging parents. Thanksgiving usually involves alcohol. With a normal family, discussing this when alcohol is involved may or may not be a good idea. In an aging long-distance family, this would be the time to set up a family meeting via teleconference or Skype when everyone is sober. You could just ask everyone if would gather ideas and you can discuss it at that time.

With elderly parent’s decline- everyone’s independence is threatened and anger and frustration can be rampant.

If adult siblings did make a  visit to elderly parents before Thanksgiving, it could have been bitter or sweet or it was just plain scary. This is why it is best to set up a post-thanksgiving meeting with all the siblings to discuss care, not when people are drinking more than they should on Thanksgiving.

Adult children may decide they must intercede or offer direct help, even if it is rejected. Then family members who do not live nearby become long-distance care providers, joining 7 million others in the US.

Offer to Facilitate a Telephonic Family Meeting After Thanksgiving

The frightening part often happens when you haven’t seen an aging Mom or Dad for a while. If midlife siblings live long distance, making an occasional visit can set off alarms, especially if they find aging Mom or Dad has gone downhill. If they call you, offer to facilitate the call using your family meeting facilitation skills, to create an agenda with the family, and keep everyone on the topic of parental care in the here and now, rather than fracturing into an argument about the past or old family wounds. With a care manager as a facilitator, they will find your value.

Selling a Product to Assisted Living Makes the Sale

March 3, 2022

Selling a Product Assisted Living Makes the Sale

Selling a product to assisted living makes the sale. But GCMs or ALCA members rarely see themselves as salespersons. This is a fatal error. You may have a product, for Assisted Living residents but to make money from that product, you have to sell it.

What Product or Service Should You Sell

Care Managers often market to Assisted Living. What ALF Directors want to hear is how your ALCA or GCM  agency is going to benefit the Assisted Living site. Of course, you can describe your agency features, price, training of staff, gold standard service. However, benefits make the sale.

As benefits  make the sale here are some benefits you can offer to Assisted Living when you are seeking referrals and you have a service  for residents that involves a Concierge Companion

What Benefits Make the Sale is Assisted Living?

The problem: Assisted Living does not want residents to move out. Most facilities are strictly non-medical and do not have one-to-one companion and geriatric care management services. They do offer activities but only one activity director for all the residents. Your geriatric care management agency can solve that problem through the benefits of ALCA or geriatric care management by the geriatric care manager offering a quality of life program, like Concierge Companion, product in my GCM Operations Manual, to help residents who move in getting involved in activities at the facility and outside the facility, so they feel part of the  ALF community and do not want to move out.

ALF products help residents who move in getting involved in activities

The assisted living and retirement community population sometimes have new residents with needs that cannot be met with their nonmedical, non-one-on-one support services, like loneliness and isolation

  • You will help the facility with residents who are not adjusting to the facility or considering moving by engaging them in activities that will enhance the quality of their life, THE BENEFIT  so they remain in the facility.
  • You will help residents not engaging in activities to participate in the ALF’s activities program or outside activities and socialization program through a quality of life assessment & companion, THE BENEFIT  they do not want to move out of the facility
  • You will engage with new residents who are just adjusting both to the facility and their move, to engage in socialization and activity programs. You can help them make friends & engage in outside activities through a quality of life assessment and companion, THE BENEFIT so they do not consider moving out
  • You will make monthly monitoring visits to make sure your Concierge Companion is meeting all the client’s needs, keep in touch with the family and facility with frequent e-mails, texts or telephone updates plus send a monthly report THE BENEFIT so everyone is on the same page through your great communication skills.

Who Makes The Buying Decision?

Even if it is a service, people are buying your product. To begin to put together a sales plan you need to identify who makes the decision to buy your GCM/ALCA Assisted Living

products or services. With older adults over age 85, the buying decision is generally made by the adult children or the third party (trust officer, etc.). Many times young older adults (65–85 years of age) make their own buying decisions.

What is Your Assisted Living Sales Plan?

Does this buying decision require personal contact in an intake by a GCM, an Assisted Living sell sheet for a Concierge Companion service you dropped off at the Assisted Living Director’s office, sales meeting with the director, meeting with the older resident, complimentary consultation with the Assisted Living resident’s family, word of mouth, paid advertising, through social media- if so what – blog, web site – what describe your sales plan to uncover customers needs. It will have to go in your business plan plus- be good enough to get you, customers.

What Criteria Does The Assisted Living Customer Use to Make a Purchase

You then need to identify what criteria the person making the buying decision uses to evaluate your Assisted Living product. First, you have to figure out whether the decision to purchase your Assisted living product is made by the Assisted Living Director, the older resident, or the adult child. Next, you must decide what criteria do the resident adult child or Assisted Living Director uses to buy your assisted living product: price, features like not losing the resident, the parent not being happy, or having a poor quality of life in the facility. How will you give your customer, the adult child, enough information to say yes?

Should You Use Features vs Benefits of Care Management?

February 10, 2022

HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN WHAT GERIATRIC CARE MANAGEMENT DOES?

What are the features vs benefits of care management? Actually, what are features vs benefits? Think about your last few marketing campaigns. Look over some of the emails you sent to prospective customers or the social media updates you made promoting your brand-new product or service. Read over some of the blog posts you published.

How much of your promotional content is focused on how your product benefits the caller? How much of your sales pitch described what your products do???

TWO MARKETING APPROACHES

FEATURES

When it comes to marketing, there are two primary approaches you can take with features vs benefits. The first focuses on what your product or service is or does – including all the shiny bells and whistles you’ve worked so hard to develop. The other focuses on how your product or service will improve users’ lives. Features tell the customer “what” and benefits tell the customer “why”

Care Manager selling benefits vs features to elder

Which of these approaches do you think is more effective for the adult children or seniors you market to?

Take a look at the list of features below, taken directly from current advertising and marketing materials.

American Lifetime Self-setting clock for seniors with dementia It is the only one of its kind to include 5 multi-function alarms, with the option to set reminders to take medications throughout the day.

Jitterbug Senior Smart Phone 2  with Large 5.5″ screen, easy to see and  5 Urgent Response button

umbrella that opens and closes with a button

Each is a feature-a factual statement about the product or service being promoted. But features aren’t what entice customers, ( adult children you market to), to buy your product. That’s where benefits come in. A benefit answers the question “What’s in it for me? or what will help my parent or me the caregiver”. This means the feature provides the customer/client with something of value to them. As a result, this is where most businesses go wrong.

Benefits

The feature of a self-setting clock is that it automatically resets itself & reminds the person with dementia to take their meds. The clock’s self-setting feature stops the dementia client from resetting it then forgetting needed medications & times. The benefit is the dementia patient will take meds on time, will be healthier and the caregiver less stressed.

The feature is the Jitterbug phone is that seniors with diminishing eyesight and memory have a hard time reading text on phones or recalling phone numbers. As a result, medical emergencies, are very dangerous. The important feature of jitterbugs is a large easy to see response button that gets them one person who will help the senior even if they forgot the number. This is just like the operator they used to get on the phone. The benefit of Jitterbug  is it makes the older person much safer and the family members confident they can reach help if they need it

The benefit of an umbrella that opens with one button is -you stay dryer in the rain as seniors often have arthritis that can make it difficult to push open an umbrella quickly, to keep dry in the rain.

The best way to understand the true benefit of your product or service or to answer the “What’s in it for me?”  A customer’s perception of each feature’s results is what attracts him or her to a particular product or service.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF GERIATRIC CARE MANAGEMENT?

What are the features vs benefits of care management? What if you are selling geriatric care

Female Support Worker Visits Senior Man At Home

management to a long-distance son and explain the feature of care management is an assessment. As a result, he has no idea what that is, not being a social worker or an RN. He is just a desperate long-distance son. He wants to know, what’s in it for him. What’s his benefit.

You could say you have a  product called  “Safe at Home” that will make sure his Mom is getting all the support and care she needs and  ( 1st benefit) he will not get midnight panic calls or have to scramble to make emergency flights to solve a crisis, like a hospitalization. Plus you will make sure any problems are solved (2nd  benefit) before they turn into a crisis that he has to solve from far away, always keeping him informed  (3rd benefit)so he can go back to just being a son. This feature vs benefit sales pitch take a huge weight off his shoulder- answering his ” what’s in it for me”

Omicron Gone Nuclear-Are you Marketing Your Agencies COVID-19 Safety ?

January 3, 2022

How Do You Market the Safety Of Your Agency with Omicron Cases Exploding Nationally?

What is the best way to show the Covid -19 safety protocols of your GCM or homecare agency with new Omicron surge exploding COVID cases once again?  You must overcome adult children’s hesitation to use homecare and GCM services. Why hesitation? Although about 62% of all Americans are now vaccinated -while— more than 87 percent of adults 65 and older — have been fully vaccinated, yet terrifying the public and adult children who care for aging loved one’s needing care at home —as  COVID exploding again with the highly contagious omicron variant accounting for an estimated 58.6% of sequenced U.S. virus cases in the week ending Dec. 25, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Nowcast model showed, was up from an estimated 22.5% a week earlier ., 22% self identify as anti-vaxers,  So aging families remain very nervous about your agency coming into a senior home.

During this new COVID-19 Omicron surge what families look for in your agency is your Covid 19 safety of staff- the care providers, care managers, and office staff’s vaccination rate, your safety protocols, PPE equipment use, and evidence that you work with your local department of health, state and CDC to stay compliant.

DO YOU CREATE A COVID -19 SAFETY MARKETING PLAN?

Hygienic shield offering COVID-19 Saftey from omicron

A key element that goes into that marketing plan would be an e-newsletter, with a marketing campaign on your covid-19 safety  sent out in formats like Constant Contact   Survey Monkey  other choices

This will boost the clients you can serve, as the Omicron surge has made adult children and elderly clients are nervous to have visitors come to their homes, exposing elders

States and individual health systems have historically addressed vaccination requirements for diseases such as influenza and hepatitis B. You must follow your state’s COVID regulations.  Today, more than 2,500 hospitals, or 40 percent of all U.S. hospitals, have announced COVID vaccination requirements for their workforce. They span all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.  Potential clients need to know your care staff and care managers you use are incentivized to get vaccinated.
