Death Doula – What is that?-In this 1 ½ -hour webinar you will learn “What is Death Doula and how Care managers can work with them.

Sign up for my webinar on Death Doulas and End of Life.  In A Washington Post, this week a Post article said that Death Doulas have become a nationwide death-positive, national movement mirroring the traditional ritual in Mexico that many Americans also celebrate, the Day of the Dead. That ritual holiday celebrates death as a positive part of life by remembering those who have died, honoring them with flowers ( marigolds), and “commemorating death as another element of life.

We live in a culture that is afraid of death- where death, like birth, was hidden in institutions, like nursing homes and hospitals for decades so that families never had to experience it. This hiding away from the entrance and exit of life is one reason why we fear death. Death-like birth used to occur at home, where families could see and feel the dying person, hold them, and smell them, so those fears were not there. Now like a birth, that can happen at home death can too at home with the help of a  geriatric care manager and a Death Doula who like a midwife of birth –  is a midwife of death. This a reason you should sign up for my webinar on Deliver of Good End of Life.

Videos are Great Sales Tool for Care Management

June 27, 2022

Videos Are A Powerful  Marketing Tool

Videos are a powerful marketing tool  .The power of video marketing shows in its growth into a $135 billion industry. Brands everywhere are realizing the value of videos and creating them. According to ALCA’s former marketing guru Courtney Pulitzer,75 million people watch videos every day and stunning viewers retain 95% of the message while watching compared to only 10 %-of reading text.

Use Videos In Your Own Care Management Marketing

Show your community your agency’s excellent safety through videos, done with a phone by a talented staff member. Take the example of Lifespan a 35-year-old geriatric care management home care agency that provides Quality of Life activities and adds videos about  Lifespan‘s Well Being Program. They upload them to their YouTube channel another great way they build trust with their agency. Market safety from Covid-19.

Videos are not hard to make

You just need a smartphone tripod and a person to do the videoing Learn to shoot great videos yourself. Look at my latest video made with my iPhone.I have a YouTube Channel on Geriatric Care Management for years. I made most of them with an I phone. However, you may need some expert help. I have gotten much more sophisticated and now have two videographers. An excellent one is Tapfilms, also used by Lifespan. A second is East Coast Studios which does all my online classes in geriatric care management. If you join to the Aging Life Care Asso ( ALCA) use their excellent video marketing resources

What Type of Conceirge Care Providers Do You Recruit for Concierge Clients?

May 2, 2022

Medicare does not fund long term care

Medicare Does Not Fund Long Term Care

Concierge Clients, wanting concierge care providers, are sadly the only clients of GCM or ALCA experts because of income inequity in the US and the fact that Medicare does not cover long-term care,  like home care and geriatric care management.

You Are Only As Strong As Your Weakest Link Especially With Concierge Clients!

You must serve the top 10%  of aging Americans because those clients make your ALCA business or GCM  business make money and thrive. But to deliver the gold standard services that concierge care demands, let’s take the weakest link in your business- your care staff. You are only as strong as your weakest link these concierge care providers. These incredibly important employees’ skills will measure how concierge clients really rate you.

First and foremost to serve Concierge clients you need highly skilled concierge care providers with a CNA background or years of experience. Older generations, especially entitled clients, are likely to be

less trustful of an individual with numerous visible tattoos and a Mohawk. They would rather have their concierge care providers be a clean-cut employee wearing a uniform. You want background-checked employees with tolerant of demanding clients and willing to be servile and assertive and know when to use either.

Concierge Care Providers for Concierge Clients Should Be:

Concierge Care Provider
  • WELL-GROOMED
  • WELL DRESSED
  • SERVILE
  • GOOD COOK
  • GOOD TABLE SETTERS
  • WILLING TO BE CONFIDANTE but under GCM supervision

Concierge caregiver

For COMPANION CARE hire

  • Sophisticated employee
  • Can Order Opera theater tickets
  • Accompany to events
  • Drivers Licence

GCM has to Set Boundaries with concierge clients:

  • Concierge care providers can cook French Cuisine but if the client“Heavy Care-priority -must have transfer skills and CNA or HHA skills not cooking skills
  • Cannot often get a gourmet cook who changes diapers
  • Cannot have careprovider looks like a model who uses Hoyer lift

CONCIERGE Clients-NON-medical

CAREGIVER’S SAMPLE to-do list

  • Doing grocery shopping or grocery home delivery
  • Post office run
  • Pet-care
  • Waiting in line at the DMV
  • Taking the car for Car repairs, oil change, car wash
  • Event planning- GCM
  • Gift-buying
  • Plant care
  • Picking up dry cleaning
  • Running miscellaneous errands
  • Making travel arrangements
  • Mail pickup
  • chef services
  • Dinner reservations
  • What Cannot do
  • Performing bank transactions, such as depositing or withdrawing money, or shopping for the client without pre-arranged payment through the store could pose a liability
  • Assist with finances, online banking, bill paying/tracking
  • pickup of prescription medications -Only GCM to do because of medication abuse and liability

Passover Begins Friday-Care Managers Can Support Clients Spiritual Needs

April 11, 2022

Passover begins Friday and brings many Jews will celebrate with a seder

where their spiritual beliefs will be celebrated with food, family, and ritual.

As we age joining in spiritual rituals means more and more to us. Ritual

religious holidays like Passover fill all faiths, but especially elders faiths and both spiritual and emotional needs.

A Care Manager needs to learn how to offer elders support and inclusion during  holidays like Passover or any religious holiday.

Spiritual rituals mean more as we age

Care management is first and foremost a holistic interaction between

a caring professional and an older adult. Holistic care works

with the senior beyond just the necessary formal services. Care

managers should work with the seniors and their families to know their religious needs if any. Getting to know the person includes understanding the physical, social, emotional, and spiritual needs and how you can help them get included in the celebration.

Even though Passover begins Friday the average care manager does not see themselves as doing therapy with their clients or encouraging religion. But the work of Carl Jung or Viktor Frankl may be more than is useful. For most care managers , it is helpful to follow a few rules:

1. Listen to the client. Understand the client’s perception of the religious phenomenon as the person describes it and how you can help them celebrate Passover or any religious holiday if they wish.

2. Listen to his or her the perceptions of the client’s faith tradition and

spiritual beliefs and how much and how they want to be included in family celebrations or religious services so you can help them do this, through contacting the family, the spiritual place of worship, so they can attend and have transportation or  arrange some form of celebration if homebound

Passover begins Friday

3. Consult with the Rabbi from the Temple near them, who can help interpret any

beliefs or rituals or symbols that cannot be fully understood from the description of the client and if the temple has transportation for elders to services if the client wishes to attend.
