Are those college students from the ’60s Free Speech Movement still protesting? Has their student activism translated into senior activism? As the national No Kings Protest on October 18, 2025, will also be protesting free speech, will seniors who are concerned about the erosion of free speech join in the No Kings Protest on October 18th, 2025?

The Free Speech Movement  /(FSM), which took place at the University of California, Berkeley in 1964–1965 ( my alma mater). It was a student protest against campus restrictions on political activities, employing mass civil disobedience tactics to advocate for free speech rights. Led by graduate student Mario Savio, the FSM successfully challenged university rules, laid the groundwork for student activism, and influenced later movements against the Vietnam War.  One of the movement’s main goals was to take back the First ammendment.

This Free Speech movement spread throughout the country in the 1960s generation due to the hatred of the Vietnam War. Now, 65 years later, those young people are today’s seniors. What do seniors think of the erosion of free speech under the 2025 Trump administration? They oppose him and his policies.

Seniors have so much to protest – the loss of Free Speech, as they have lived with the rights of the First Amendment for over 60 years, including the right to free speech.

An article by Bill McKibben, the co-founder of Third Act, mobilizes people over 60 to take action on climate and justice. His article, published in the  Los Angeles Times, is titled “Why older Americans are Trump’s biggest Nightmare,”  MKibbonsays says YES!

That there’s a spasm of dislike for Trump’s chaotic presidency is not news. New polls show that Americans are unhappier with this president at 100 days than with any of his predecessors. Much of the attention has focused on his rapidly falling numbers with young voters .“Is Gen Z abandoning Trump?” According to McKibbon, we’re seeing signs — in the data and on the streets — of something that may be an even bigger problem for the MAGA world. This guy increasingly repels older Americans.

Numbers first: If you look at the internals of, say, the most recent Marist poll, he does worst among members of the oldest age cohort. Only 37% of the greatest/silent generation — people in their 80s and 90s — approve of the president’s performance. McKibbon says that baby boomers — those, like us, in our 60s and 70s — aren’t far behind, with only 41% giving him the nod, compared to very nearly half of Gen X.

Are those 1970s college students of the ’60s free speech movement still protesting?

Seniors care about the loss of Free Speech, as they have lived with the rights of the First Amendment for over 60 years. They have seen in the last few weeks that President Trump has been kicking Jimmy Kimmel and Steven Colbert off the TV airwaves. This was a national attack on free speech and the First Amendment.

Trump’s overreach to elders includes multiple cuts. First, Social Security takes away older people’s own lifetime savings. It also involves slashing Medicaid, affecting nearly 9 million older adults aged 65, by ending cuts that help them afford health care and long-term services and supports. His dangerous overreach towards seniors includes the elimination of the Older Americans Act, which provides essential services, including Meals on Wheels, adult day care, area agencies on aging, falls prevention, elder abuse prevention, respite care, and caregiver support. Part of Trump’s national strategy is to slice senior services to 57.8 million over-65 individuals -the Baby Boomer generation, who protested free speech 60 years ago.
